It seems that 2020 is the year of many things both positive and negative, including sports documentaries from the upbeat and competitive drama of Cheer to the nostalgia and sports legacies in The Last Dance. Netflix will soon release another sports documentary that offers a much different tone.
The documentary will center around the investigation into the sexual abuse allegations against former U.S. Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar and the failure of U.S. Gymnastics to protect its athletes from harm.
Athlete A will arrive on Netflix June 24. The film, originally set to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival before its cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic, revolves around “Athlete A,” who was the first gymnast to report Nassar for abuse to the U.S. Gymnastics.
“Athlete A,” or rather Maggie Nichols, is a former member of the team. She went on to have a successful collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma. In 2018, she identified herself as Athlete A. Nichols and her fellow survivors were honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs later in the year. The film demonstrates how deep Nassar’s abuse was and how it has caused a domino effect within the gymnastics world that is far from over. Needless to say, it will definitely be thought-provoking.
